Fire alarms and emergency lighting
Design, installation, commissioning and testing of fire alarm and emergency lighting systems for retail, education and commercial premises — to BS 5839 and BS 5266, with the certification and log book entries your fire risk assessment depends on.
The system is only as good as its paperwork
Fire alarm and emergency lighting systems are the part of an installation that gets inspected rather than admired. What matters is that the category is right for the building, the coverage matches the fire risk assessment, and there's a commissioning certificate and a log book to prove it.
We install and commission complete systems, take over and extend existing ones during fit-outs, and carry out the periodic testing that keeps them compliant. Where a store layout changes, we re-survey the detection and escape lighting rather than leaving heads where the shelving used to be.
What we cover
- Fire alarm design and installation to BS 5839
- Conventional, addressable and wireless systems
- Panel replacement, extensions and takeovers
- Commissioning and certification
- Emergency lighting design and installation to BS 5266
- Monthly function tests and annual duration tests
- Escape route and open-area lighting surveys
- Log book set-up and periodic testing records
Tested and recorded. Emergency lighting needs a monthly function test and an annual full duration test, and fire alarms need periodic servicing. We carry these out and record them properly, so the evidence exists when someone asks for it.

Detail
Where this usually comes up
During a shop refit
Move the shelving and you move the escape routes. Detection and emergency lighting have to be re-surveyed, not just reconnected.
After an insurance claim
Fire damage almost always means the alarm system needs assessing, and often recommissioning or replacing.
On school sites
Extensions and modular classrooms have to be brought into the existing system properly, with the coverage re-checked.
At periodic inspection
If your log book has gaps, we can survey the system, test it and get the records straight.
Common questions
Before you call
Can you take over an existing system?
Yes. We'll survey what's there, tell you honestly whether it's worth keeping and what it needs to be compliant.
Do you do the periodic testing as well as installation?
Yes — monthly and annual emergency lighting tests and fire alarm servicing, with the records handed over.
Which standards do you work to?
BS 5839 for fire detection and alarm systems, BS 5266 for emergency lighting, and BS 7671 for the installation itself.
